Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness studies, translation of research outcome into updated policy
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is the oldest university in Tanzania that was established in 1961 and offers various programmes, including Medicine, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences and Medical Laboratory studies among others. The University of Dar es Salaam Mbeya College of Health and Allied Sciences (UDSM-MCHAS) was established in 2014 as School of Health Sciences (SoHS). Bernard Ngowi, MD, PhD epidemiologist and public health specialist, has longstanding experience in HIV/AIDS, Cysticercosis, tubercolosis and health system research. He has conducted epidemiological studies in HIV/AIDS throughout Tanzania. He was also part of a previous study on neurocysticercosis (NCC) where he participated in the HIV/AIDS sub study. Dr. Ngowi has led several studies on Taenia solium taeniasis /cysticercosis, tuberculosis, HIV and noncommunicable diseases with funding amount ranging from 200,000 Euros to 1.5milion Euros; and currently the study on determination of the characteristics of patients with symptomatic active NCC and effect of treatment on symptoms, lesions and quality of life among people living with HIV and HIV negative individuals in Southern Tanzania funded by BMBF under CYSTNET Africa. His involvement in public health programmes, such as management of NCC provides the group with the experience and expertise needed in the management of neurocysticercosis. Bernard Ngowi is also a member of the East African Consortium for Clinical Research and a postdoctoral assistant of monitoring and evaluation Afrique One-ASPIRE Consortium, a consortium of ecosystem and health.
